I would like to know if it is possible to replace the logic board in my Dual USB 500 Mhz iBook with a 700/800 Mhz logicboard that has the upgraded video card? I would love the speed increase and since the iBook is presently not doing anything except sitting it would make it useful again (hello DreamWeaver).

What I need to know is:

1. Is the layout of any faster board the same?

2. With the video chip work with the screen in the 12" or did Apple replace that as well, making the whole process a failure?

Basically I am asking what are my options? Logic boards (complete) are fairly cheap on E-Bay (less than $200 for 700/800 Mhz) and this seems like an excellent project. At the same time I plan on upgrading the HDD, ApX, RAM and Painting the case.

The main thing that keeps me from replacing the iBook with the new model is:

1. I want something unique
2. The new case is white, and cannot be painted the same way the original snow white can, which is one of the reasons I bought this.
Please help!! I am trying to ditch Wintel He11 for OS X and am a MAC newbie.

I think i've read "somewhere" that you can't do it. But don't take my word for it. Try some other sites like MacFixIt or XLR8yourmac to see if they have something on it.
I fully agree on upgrading the hard drive and ram but I think you'd be pleasently surprised at how well your iBook runs 10.3.4. I bought one of those beauties for my girlfriend and she uses it as her everyday computer running Panther. It feels, for the most part, as fast as my 800 mhz. G3 iBook. I'm sure it depends on what you're going to be doing with it but browsing, email, iTunes, word processing and other simple stuff work just fine as far as we're concerned.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

my gf's 500 has 640 mb ram and the original 10 gb hd. I just got her an airport card. Panther is MUCH faster than Jag.
