Sorry if this is a really stupid question. I just purchased a new 14" 1.2 ghz iBook to compliment my 17" Powerbook. One thing that I was wondering is how noticeable is the hard drive noise supposed to be?

The sound from my Powerbook's is silent, but I continually hear what I think is the hard drive on iBook, sounding like water in a percolator in the upper left corner of the keyboard anytime I do the least activity.

Thanks for any insight.

I can hear the fan noise if I really listen and the room is quiet. It is an extremely quiet constant background noise. I am not someone who expects a completely silent computer, but this other noise is audible when you are not even near the laptop.

The noise I am talking about is a lot louder / intrusive it kicks on/off extremely fast when you open, close or save something, making me think that think that it is just a loud hard drive. It definitely has a percolating popcorn popping quality to it rather than a constant whirring. I would swear it seems to be coming from the top left part of the keyboard.

Is this a normal iBook sound?

From what you are describing, no. I have a 14" 933 iBook and I do hear what I think you're describing, but it's not often and it's usually short in duration, as in a few seconds. I would suggest having it looked at. Hope you can get it resolved.
