Been reading a lot on the PB as I await the arrival of my 15" 1.5. One question on the sleep function. I understand this is a nice instant-on hibernation feature for the OS. Just curious if it truly parks the hard drive in the same way that a power off does?

I'm not looking to carry my PB to Cleveland on horseback, but just wondering if it's truly as safe to transport a sleeping powerbook compared to a powered down one?

Appreciate your experiences here.

I honestly don't know, but why would you? Starting up my Powerbook takes a whopping.. Well I haven't timed it, but it's fast.

Yes, it's completely safe to do this. I do it all the time. My PB's been on for over 40days.

I transport my pb while its sleep everyday, infact I never turn it off or restart unless a software update recomends it.When u put it to sleep its like its turned off anyway, thus there is no danger in moving it while it sleep.

You can hear the heads park when the computer goes to sleep.

Anyway, calling OS X's sleep function a "nice feature" is an understatement. Sleep is a whole new paradigm. iMacs don't even have an easy to reach on/off button anymore.

You'll soon find that you rarely shut off your PowerBook.

I've become used to hitting Power then S on my PB every time I put it down. It's ultra-convenient and it increases the time between fill-ups!

Of course it is safe to move it when it's asleep. Hasn't this question been asked about a million times?

i've shipped my various PowerBooks to Apple for repair dozens of times. i always put them to sleep when i pack them up, and they are always sleeping when i recieve them back. if a PowerBook can safely be shipped across the country in sleep mode, i think that simply moving it should be fine.

I'm sure it parks the heads or something - drives these days are pretty smart. I would suggest giving it a few seconds to spin down fully before moving it about though. I've had mine on for 6/7 months now - I've hardly ever turned it off, I send it to sleep instead.

Yeah, I do that when the dog's around, but Power -> S takes less effort, and I'm all for that!

I have taken mine thru airport security and on the plane in sleep mode.
Made a 2 hour flight and then another hour home.. it never complained a bit.
