I debated on putting this in the peripherals - but I want the opinions of PB users so...
Got a PB w/ the combo drive - so I am looking for an external DVD burner. Recommendations?
Also - any thoughts about Firewire v.s. USB 2.0? And are there FW800 burners out there yet at a reasonable cost?

I would recommend a Lacie external DVD-RW FW drive. It works with my powerbook w/o a problem. With a very small program (HPfurz) and iDVD, the burner can burn DVD to the full burning speed. There is no need to search for FW 800 drive. Speed of FW 400 is enogh to burn DVD.

If you can find a good deal on Pioneers, those are what the Superdrives use.

Yeah, although LaCie's drives will burn dual-layer DVD+Rs, they only use the DVD+R format (not DVD-R format, which is better supported on the Mac), and they only burn dual-layer discs at 2.4x. They still burn single-layer DVD-R and DVD+R at 8x.
Anyway, Pioneer drives are excellent. I have a DVR-107D that I bought for my PowerMac. If you want an external drive, it's usually cheaper to buy the drive and the case separately. So if you go to NewEgg.com, you can get the Pioneer DVR-107D for $84, and a 5.25" Firewire case for about $40. There's a listing of 5.25" Firewire cases here. Also, if you can go with a USB 2.0 enclosure, you'll spend significantly less. However, I think you can't boot from a USB optical drive.

That's what I did I DVD-107D (8x+-)IDE with 50 Matrix DVD-R 8X DVDs for $91 and a Compusa "Mobile Disk" Firewire/USB2 enclosure!
