the bluetooth module in my 1 week old 17inch pb stopped working.
i think it may be dead.

apple hardware test says i don't have one.
system profiler says i don't have one.
bluetooth setup assistence says i don't have any bluetooth hardware/adaptors.

if it is dead.. i think i know how/when it died.

it was working last night when i was typing with my BT keyboard.
but i have been on battery power all weekend off and on.. and last night it was down to 7% or something..

i left it on and went to the other room, i came back and it was asleep.. so i left it like that, over night... till about a few hours ago..

but it would not wake from sleep.. i assumed it wouldn't as it was too low on power.
so i dug out the power adaptor and then when i plugged in the adaptor.. the pb turned off.

i turned it back on.. and that is when the keyboard wasn't working.. and it said i had no bluetooth devices (bluetooth: unavailable).

interestly the system.log file says this:

Jul 24 17:08:50 localhost kernel: [IOAppleBluetoothHIDDriver][init] IOBluetoothHIDDriver 1.1.1
Jul 24 17:08:50 localhost kernel: [IOBluetoothHIDDriver][init] IOBluetoothHIDDriver 1.1.1
Jul 24 17:08:50 localhost kernel: [IOAppleBluetoothHIDDriver][handleStart][00-0a-95-3a-8d-13] Done.
Jul 24 17:09:01 localhost kernel: [IOAppleBluetoothHIDDriver][waitForHandshake][00-0a-95-3a-8d-13] Unsuccessful Handshake: e00002c7
Jul 24 17:09:01 localhost kernel: [IOAppleBluetoothHIDDriver][waitForHandshake][00-0a-95-3a-8d-13] Unsuccessful Handshake: e00002c7
Jul 24 19:49:28 localhost kernel: [IOAppleBluetoothHIDDriver][willTerminate]
Jul 24 19:49:29 localhost kernel: [IOAppleBluetoothHIDDriver][handleStop][00-0a-95-3a-8d-13] Stopped.
Jul 24 19:49:29 localhost kernel: [IOAppleBluetoothHIDDriver][free]

i fear it is dead.. a mild brown out situation during the low power sleep might have killed it..

but anyone have any tips or anything i can check.. as i don't want to be without my pb so soon

Hi,
Have you tried the following?

1) Reset the PRAM, Turn off the computer, Hold down the Apple,Option,P,R keys. Then turn on the computer, still holding the keys. Keep on holding it down until 3 "bongs" then let the computer boot up and see if bluetooth comes back

2) Reset the power manager, turn of computer, unplug the power adaper and hold down Apple,Option,Shift keys. Then plug the power adapter back and repeat step 1. Then try to see if it works.

3) Reset settings/defaults, Turn off the computer, Hold down the Apple,Option,O,F keys. Then turn on the computer, still holding the keys. Keep on holding it down until see a screen that titles "Welcome to OpenFirmware" or something like that
then type: reset-nvram
then: set-defaults
then: reset-all, the computer should reboot
Then immediaedly do step 1, (reset pram) and then check

4) If all else fails call: 1-800-APL-CARE

Good luck on the problem! If nothing above works and you have tons of time, try to reinstall the OS, apply ALL latest OS patches/updates and see if bluetooth is back

Correct my anyone if there are any errors in the steps above
-Paul

Edit: Also run apple hardware test and see if there are any errors. While your there, under the hardware tab, check if it detects the bluetooth hardware. Making sure you don't get confused if it says: Bluetooth Devices: Not Present, because my old Powerbook G4 867 said the same thing, but bluetooth worked for me. <-- someone check if i'm correct about that please

Sometime ago I tried to use the wireless driver cd that came with the keyboard. It totally froze my 17" laptop. It then told me that the Bluetooth module was not there. I panicked then accessed my Application folder and found that the app was still there. I clicked on it to open and clicked on the bluetooth logo. It asked me if it wanted to be shown on the desktop...
After that I never used the cd and just used Bluetooth setup which resulted in my wireless being recognized and working.

My apologies if this doesn't help you.
Sincerely,
Mackill
