You need some kind of proof that you are in school. A school ID is best or maybe even a schedule would do. Call the Apple Store where you live to make sure.

No, you don't need proof.

I never had to give any evidence, I just chose my university and bought stuff. Just BUY it !

Fat7at asked about going to an Apple Store.

If you are going into a Apple Store you will need to show proof that you are a student. If you are ordering online they don't ask for proof up front. There is a possibility that Apple will ask for proof that you where a student at the time of purchase. If you can't prove that you where a student at that time they will ask that you pay the difference.

All you need is something saying you got into the school or are registered. A friend of mine registered at the local community college for a non-credit class and was able to get the edu discount at the apple store the next day using the confirmation note from the school. Actually it was just a PDF off her old iBook that he showed to the sales rep. And yes, she is actually taking the class.

Here's who is eligible, from the Apple education store:

'Student currently attending or accepted into a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States'

And teachers too.

I recently bought an iBook, 20gig iPod ($200 off) and HP 5150 printer (free) using my student discount at an Apple store. I brought one of the many letters my college had sent about something random and that was enough. Good deal overall.

if you want to buy a mac at a retail apple store (not online) then you will need a student ID and proof of residency, like a drivers license or state ID.

Actually, you don't need a student ID. It's the easiest and most obvious but that requirement would make recently accepted students ineligible, and new students buy their computers the summer before they leave for college. Driver's license/ID card though, you do need that.

For proof of student status all you need is some official piece of paper or class schedule or whatever that shows the school and that you are accepted or enrolled. Even an acceptence letter would probably suffice.
