Hi guys, i'm a long time listner/first time caller
I have one of the new 15 inch 1.33ghz powerbooks. Its only a couple of months old, but I find when I use it and dont have a chance to get it plugged in before the battery dies, that the date and time reset back to 1970. Does this happen to anyone elses machines?

The date and time are stored in memory and backup by the battery. I know with PowerMacs its a small battery on the motherboard. Not sure if PBs use a small battery or just the main battery. Either way when you drain the battery the memory is wiped out and the computer resets itself to 1970.

Why the poll and not just a question?

Portable Computers: Models Which Do Not Have a Backup Battery
This document describes which portable Macintosh computers do not contain a backup battery and what this means.

Portable Macintosh Computers without a Backup Battery

* iBook (all models)
* iBook G4 (all models)
* PowerBook G4 (12-inch) (all models)

Changing a Battery in a Portable Without a Backup Battery

Because there is no backup battery in the portable computers listed in the section above, additional care should be taken ensure the AC adapter is plugged in.

Removing the Main System Battery without AC Power

When removing the main battery without the AC Adapter, the computer should be shut down since the contents of RAM are lost when no power is available. There is a small capacitor that maintains the system clock long enough to swap the main battery.

hmmm yeah, maybe i didnt need the poll .. but i just wanted to see what other peoples machines do. Ive rung applecare a couple of times and had conflicting answers. the first guy told me that its absolutely normal and that the powerbook does not have a backup battery (which seems a bit silly to me) and then I spoke to a girl who said that it sounds like a problem with the battery and i should change it. Ive had a search on the site, and no one seems to mention it so was wondering if its normal, or if its just me, or if there are people out there with the same problem but are not bothered about it

which would make sense to me, appart from the first guy i spoke to at applecare who was 100% convinced that it didnt. guess, im just curious to see if it happens to anyone else
or maybe no one lets there machine get that low on juice?
