Is it possible to get 5.1 audio out of your powerbook? Will you get 5.1 discrete channels if you just hook 5.1 speakers up to the headphone jack or do you need a special component (i'm thinking a USB device that reads DVD audio or something)? My movie collection is getting to be somewhat large so I would like to know if I have the option of 5.1 audio from what I'll be watching movies on predominantly in college. Thanks

EDIT: after making this post I did some googling on my question and I came across the Sonica Theater High Resolution 7.1 Surround Sound USB Card from M-Audio. It costs 99 dollars and interfaces with the computer via USB 1.1 and can provide up to 7.1 channels of audio.

Does anyone have any experience with this or other devices?

I had that M-Audio driver for my powerbook. It worked great and finally allowed me full use of my speaker set. I got mine off ebay though and saved a little. You can find usb audio cards anywhere from $50 to $70 off ebay.

I'm in the market for some USB powered speakers. This looks like a good option. Does it really pump out 7.1 with MacOS X?

I'm pretty sure it does what the site says it does. I decided to get this as well as the Altec Lansing VS3151 5.1 speakers. They are list 100 but available for 60 at CompUSA and I read really good reviews on them....the most bang for the buck under 100.

If you want a really good BANG for your buck you might consider spending a tiny bit more and getting yourself a set of Logitech Z5300s (5.1 THX cert... very nice power and sound)...

I might have to look into one of these external sound cards though. My 4.1 logitech Z560s sound pretty good out of the 2 channel out on the PB; however, I'd like to go with a nice pair of Z5300s or even better Z680s when I get some funds (xmas maybe...)

I've got the z5300's here and they sound just fine for me. I just wish m-audio would update their drivers for the Sonica Theater. Every so often my iChat sounds cut out.
