I recently abandoned my wintel box in favor of a new ibook g4 (1ghz) and I'm enjoying it immensely. My only problem is that I really need more RAM. I went to crucial.com to buy an extra 512mb module, but was dismayed to see that it cost $137.99 (or thereabouts), whereas the standard 512mb 200-pin pc2100 so-dimm (with the exact same technical specifications) cost only $106. I read the posts on these forums and found that most people have put the module ct6464x265.16f (which is currently going for $106), but Crucial told me that this module is incompatible with my system and will not work. The reccomend part number ct372708, which is actually module ct6464x265ap. This leaves me very confused. Should I get the part that is cheaper and has been recommended on this forum, or should I spend more and go with crucial's recommendation? I really don't want to spend the extra $30. Will the less expensive ram work?

Just compare Crucial's price to Apple's...you'll believe!
Actually, there's every possibility that the non-specific part will work in your iBook. But if you do use a part that isn't specific to your iBook model, it may cause problems down the road. Not technical problems, but "coverage" problems. If something goes wrong, Apple could easily say "it's because you used that cheap RAM..." Not that they would, but it's possible
A friend has swapped 512MB SODIMMS between his iBook and his Dell laptop, and not had any problems. Note that Crucial's 512MB part for that Dell laptop costs $123.
My advice is simply to go with what you feel is right for you.

As of less than 1 month ago, the less expensive ram was what crucial was advising for the ibook, so maybe apple would not have a valid reason to deny customer service (although they may not need a valid reason). I'm just wondering if the ram is actually different, or if crucial is just trying to pull a fast one and trick unsuspecting ibook owners into paying more for a part that is technically identical to something they're selling for $30 cheaper.

Could I interject for a moment with a similar question. I use an ivory iBook G3 800mhz 256RAM 30G HD and I am running OSX.2.8 I am looking to upgrade my RAM. I need to purchase 512MG RAM SO-DIMM. After reading through this thread I am wondering if I should purchase it directly through APPLE or can I purchase it from one of the other companies that provide it. I have looked around at companies such as RAMJET.com and MacConnection. After reading about a possible warranty violation I am concerned. I do not want to void my warranty. Please advise.
Thank you in advance for any and all guidance given.
Peace,
