I know everyone has their opinions, but before I decide, I'd like to get as many pros, cons and opinions as possible.

I am trying to decide between a PowerMac G5 and a Powerbook G4. I don't travel, and the portability of the Powerbook is more of a convenience factor than a necessity (it would be nice to take it with me on vacations to download pictures or video or watch movies). I plan to use the computer primarily for amateur level video and photo editing (using Final Cut and Photoshop) and I don't want to get bogged down with a slower processor of the Powerbook either. Suggestions, recommendations and opinions are all welcome. Specifically, is the G4 much slower than the G5 for these applications?

Thanks

The Powerbooks are sleek and pretty powerful, for a notebook. Quiet, small, well-built, and a pleasure to take on the road. The Powermac G5 is a massive, noisy, behemoth. That said, a dual G5 will stop its hiney in Photoshop and video applications. There's no comparison speed-wise, and it's not just the processor speed. It's also the RAM speed, the bus speed and the hard-drive speed. There's many many engineering differences that make a Dual 2.0 more than twice as fast as a single 1.5 at most tasks.

Also, consider Powerbook max. RAM = 2GB. Powermac G5 max. RAM = 8GB. Hard drive is also twice as big.

It would be great to have a G5 for video editing, but in my opinion if it is for ametuer editing, a PowerBook will work just fine. It is very convenient to be able to travel with your PB. I use mine all the time for Photoshop work and Final Cut and it comes in very handy on the go.

If your budget allows, you could consider a lower end PowerBook or iBook for on the go things and a G5 for your video editing.
