I've started to research the latest iBook G4 models, and an optional choice is an optical drive--a super drive, which would allow you to burn DVDs.

My question is can you plug in a LaCie DVD-R/ +RWCD-RW Firewire drive into an iBook G4 and still achieve the same effect? And is there another plug in space if you wanted to utilize a La Cie 250GB Hard Drive?

Also, is it possible to really create camcorder movie projects on an iBook G4, just as you would a regular PowerMac, or are there major drawbacks?

Would a Maintosh PowerBook work better for creating videos?

You can buy an external drive and use just like a superdrive, you may have to go through a few more steps but it's possible. Also Firewire drives work in a daisy chain and you should be able to plug one into another to share the same port. Or you could look into a USB 2 drive.
