Is there supposed to be a gap between the battery and the rest of the iBook? *pic*

well, just got an iBook for my sister today and I only noticed one thing that was strange. the battery wasn't flush with the rest of the computer. Of course it probably doesn't matter since the feet raise it up, but I was wondering if there is any problem with this and if I should take it in for repair or something.
thanks for your help.

That looks pretty reasonable to me. My iBooks always had that small gap.

When you install the battery, note that the end near the side of the case locks in place, while the inner side presses against spring loaded contacts. The contacts insure a good connection, but they also push the battery out a bit. Only the lock mechanism works against the springs, so the inner edge sticks out a bit.

Pushing on it won't hurt the computer. You should make sure the locking ring is tight, though. That'll help hold it in place.

I just meant that little screw lock that you lock with a nickel or quarter.

By design, the iBook can only mirror (display the same image) the internal display onto an external monitor. This is to distinguish it from the Powerbooks, which can span monitors (display different images on each monitor).
However, you can hack the iBook to give you the extended desktop you desire using this application:

If you haven't really started using it yet you might want to format the hard disk and do a custom install. I did that, saving about 7gb. I chose not to have the games, Garageband, iMovie, iDVD, any languages other than English and German, the games etc. The only thing I kept that others might not want is Classic, as I have a few OS9 programs I need to run.
If you don't want to do that you can just sort through it all and delete all the things you don't want.
Every single iBook I've seen has the battery that doesn't sit flush, and often a wonky space bar.

I concur. It is perfectly normal for the battery to appear like that.

Mine too... Bothers me a bit though. As well as the wonky spacebar. It kind of ruins the otherwise very neat design. In fact, my entire keyboard feels a bit loose
And, is that the character for "hero" beneath your iBook?
