Hi, my iBook G3 800 MHz just recently died a total death - won't even start up. The last time I used it, the fan went on and I decided to give it a rest by shutting it down (I hadn't in about 3 weeks... just used sleep mode). But an hour later it wouldn't start up again, no chime, no start up sounds from within.

I did notice that a few hours before this, I couldn't get the AC adapter to power the computer (it was in battery mode and there was no green or orange light on the plug) until I played with the cord a bit.

So I'm not sure if it's a logic board failure due to overheating (someone has suggested this) or I may just need a new power input board (though with a charged battery, it should still start up right? it won't).

My laptop is no longer under warranty (except in Australia where I purchased it because education customers had a 3-year tricare warranty there... I'm in the UK now so no use) and it's clearly not a video problem so it doesn't fall under the logic board repair program. Any advice?

First thing would be to make sure the battery is charged (press the button on the battery to light up the LEDs - no LEDs = no charge).

That's about as much help as I can give. Good Luck.

It sounds like it could be the famous logic board problem. I have similar symtoms, and I KNOW mine is a logic board problem because I had it in the past. The only difference is mine still makes the chiming sound.

I have a feeling I know why yours isn't, however. It's because it's still running, but you can't tell because the screen won't come up. Here is how to find out:

Hold down on the power button for at least 5 seconds. That should shut it down. Now just press on the powerbutton, and it should start right up with the chime--you just don't get a screen coming up.

If you can replicate that, I can almost guarantee you it's the logic board issue.

thanks for the replies.

battery still fully charged - 4 LED lights. so that's not it .

i've actually had the logic board video failure april of last year (was still under warranty then), so i am on my 2nd logic board. i don't get any startup activity at all this time, no whirring sound from the HD, can't go into target disk mode, no responsiveness at all is what i get. it's probably another logic board problem, but this is one that the extended program doesn't cover .
