I can't seem to get my USB2.0 SanDisk CF card reader to work. It has a 512mb cf card in it. The drive shows up on the desktop, but when i try to copy the pictures off of it (by dragging them to the hard drive, or using iPhoto to import them) it starts to copy them, then stop midway and the progress bar sits there and doesnt go any further. When i try to stop the transfer by clicking "stop", it doesnt stop. The weird thing is that in the folder on the harddrive that I tried to copy the 50 pictures to, is 4 jpegs that actually did transer and the rest are 0kb files called "finder documents." Oddly, the 4 jpegs that transfered aren't the first four files in the series, but are just randomely dispered among the "finder document" files. Im guessing the finder document files are placeholders files. The card reader works fine on my dad's ibook. Why would it not work on my new powerbook.

Installing all the OSX updates did not help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have run the hardware test and no problems were detected. Could it be a problem with the 512mb crucial ram that I put in? Everything else works fine though.

Have you tried using disk Utility to check the CF card itself? Perhaps it has some issues.

I think I formatted my card to get it working properly, but after that my digital cam would not carry audio with the MPEG movies it was able to take. Not sure if that was the cause though. Note when I say format I mean thru the computer; not the camera. Try formatting with cam first though.

Can you plug your camera directly into your Powerbook? There is no real need for a reader if you can.

Also, as others have mentioned, this sounds like it could be a card issue. CF, like any other media, can get corrupted or have bad sectors that cause issues.

I suggest first trying to get your images by plugging your camera into the USB port directly and then reformatting the card in the camera if that doesn't work.

Good luck.

I tried running disk utility with the cf card plugged into the powerbook. Disk utility says "gathering information" and just stays like that. If i unplug the cf reader, then disk utility works. So my cf card is probably messed up and disk utility cant even read it right. The wierd thing is that the cf card works fine with my ibook and dell pc.

My dad had a similar problem with the sandisk readers with the pb I bought form him and the new 17'. The only fix we were able to come up with was a diffrent brand of reader. I forget what we bought though

If you have one, try using a powered USB hub (1.1 or 2.0). As strange as it may seem since it works with the iBook, your PB (you didn't mention which model) may not be putting out enough juice to power this reader. Did you try all USB ports on the PB with the same results? Try a hub and see what happens.
