Does anybody have any suggestions for a good way to inscribe or etch a name into the case of an aluminum PowerBook?

You can bring it to a store (maybe at the mall) that sells silver platters, Zippo lighters, trophies, etc. that also does etching... if you want it to look good. That's just my suggestion.

Yes, I think that's probably the best choice (it's a co-worker's PB, not mine).

etch a name, eh. i once took a pen to an engraver at a mall and he did a very ncie job. a notebook might be a little awkward to do if his work platform is not big enough, and it might even damage the PB (sratch it), but otherwise, it should make for a ncie engraving.

I dunno about etching things on laptops, but I would definitely like to see pictures of it when it's done

i etched a cross Ion pen for my mom, and it turned out beautifully on the chrome surface. if it can be done without damaging the rest of the powebook, it might be a nice personalization on the powerbook, but the most i'd do would be on its bottom.

I'd think that it would lower the resell value on the laptop. Who would want a PB with someone else's name on it? I took a labe from a label machine (the metalic ones that stick on REAL good) and put it inside the battery bin. That way, if there ever is an issue with theft, I could prove it belonged to me that way.

I called the engraver in my mall about getting my iPod done for me but they told me that that they wont be able to engrave electronics.

Just a heads up but if you can get it done, a picture would be sweet

You could just get the top of the ram slot bay engraved. That way you could just get one of them' zippo sellers or jewelry store to do it without lugging the whole laptop down. For resale value, you can just flip the top of the ram slot bay. At least on my PB 12" IIRC the top is the same if I flip it around.

Not possible with new AluPB's, on one side of the plate the Alu sinks in so the screws level with the bottom ...

Is it not possible to get a new one from Apple ? Would one have to pay for it ?

+ get it etched, I wanna see what it looks like

Why not contact cement a custom silver nameplate onto the PowerBook instead? The nameplate would be difficult, but not impossible to remove later on.

Oops!

Eh.. anyway. If it was a simple way to get machine engravings like you get on the iPod, I would've been sold. It would kind a been "mine" trough its entire life span, so if I am certain I am going to have my PB for a good while, machine engravings would've been pretty awesome.

that's actually a very good idea. and isn't there solvents to dissolve industrial adhesives? can we use things like that to ease the removal?

I only have experience with DAP, which can be peeled or rubbed off of non-porous surfaces or else thinned with acetone. The problem with DAP is that it dries brown, but I think there are contact cements that dry clear.
