I believe that I'm going to be purchasing a Targus backpack with a built-in laptop sleeve, but it is very weak. I think I'll need further protection for my computer...

I'd also feel more comfortable using the PowerBook in the case...plus, it's just less of a hassle. That's why I'm lookng at the MacCase Binder.

It's somewhat expensive, and I don't know how much protection it really offers. Plus, it doesn't come with a handle...which shouldn't be an issue, as I shouldn't be carrying a laptop case around campus without sticking it in a backpack.

Would I be better off with another case? Are there any others like this, where you can use the PowerBook inside them (the MacCase has special "heat feet" to keep it cool...normally the PowerBook will overheat if used inside a case, even if it technically can be used)? I know that InCase has a binder-like sleeve, but I doubt that the PowerBook is meant to be used inside it. Should I simply be looking at sturdier backpacks, and forget about buying this extra binder? Most of the very sturdy laptop backpacks that I've seen are either far too small, or won't hold all my textbooks. Plus, I don't want it to be at all obvious that I'm carrying a laptop.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated .

MacCase Binder is crap, and using your notebook in a case is absurd. Cases generally have a good bit of foam or impact resistant material which doubles as good insulation. Therefore, using your notebook in a case is no different from laying it down on a bed it’ll get nice and toasty in a jiffy. That and it’s clumsy, you’ve got stuff hanging out all over the place.

As for the MacCase, they do have these “heat feet,” but I think it’s more a gimmick than anything else. I could see it working if it’s used on a desk, but if you’ve got it in your lap pressure won’t be evenly applied and the softer material will bulge up not allow any air flow. That I don’t see how a harder material right up next to the powerbook would give it any protection in the even you do drop it.

Speaking of dropping it, there’s zero protection on the left and right hand sides, it’s just a zipper. Floor, zipper, powerbook. Been there, done that, leaves some nice scratches too.

The Targus built-in sleeve is plenty safe, unless you are going off on an expedition or something.
