There were once four people named Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody. Somebody had to do a job, but Nobody wanted to do it. Nobody could see that Anybody could do it, and Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Nobody ended up doing it, and it so happened that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Yup, that will work fine. The 1024x768 might get annoying sometimes in photoshop and such, but you can always use an external monitor. 12" PowerBook is the same res so theres no real point in upgrading to that. Even the 15" is still kind of low, but I like really high resolution.

I do all of the stuff you listed with 256mb ram and it lags pretty hard sometimes but I put up with it. I have a dual G4 867 with 1Gig and it runs smooth, more ram really really helps.

Hi,

if you use eclipse 1024X768 will drive you mad.
Eclipse is a waste of screen real estate like jbuilder or most of the pc/linux tools. Try codewarrior learning edition ( or try to buy a used version or a student version ) and you will be much more happy.

If you really know what you do and don't need a debugger, BBedit, emacs or JEdit and a commandline compiler will also do the job for you. Thats what I use on my 12 inch powerbook. In that case your iBook screen will do it well.

Photoshop and word processors also work ok on the small screen.

Good luck,

Michael

Go for the 14" mid or high end ibook.

It should suit your needs well. Its an excellent value for money machine.

I run photoshop on my imac G4 700mhz, and performance is good. Your machine, despite being a notebook should be considerably faster.

I would suggest the powerbook if you intend to do video editing as you will benefit from the higher spec video card. It will make compression and exports faster, as these can be painfully slow even on the best computers.

But the ibook will certainly even handle video editing well enough.
MacBook Alu, 13", 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 256MB video
G5 Imac, 17", 1.9Ghz, 1.5GB RAM, 128MB video, built in isight, airport and bluetooth
Indigo iBook, 366mhz; 320MB RAM; CD; FW; Airport

I personally do many of the things you are asking on my 15" Powerbook... even though I just recieved it a few weeks ago. IMHO you shouldn't have huge problmes being a student and using the smaller display. Still if you're serious about it and have the money I would recomend going with either a 15" or 17" PB... or consider going with a smaller machine and getting a nice high resolution LCD. Dell frequently has their 20" LCD on sale (16ms response time... great looking screen) for arouned $800. This 1600x1200 res screan would be way better than any setup. You could go with a base 12" PB so you'd have the extra vram and native monitor spanning... would give you a great combo...
Mac: 15" 1.5ghz PB w/ 128mb vid, 5400rpm 80gb, combo drive, 2gb ram
Peripherals: 20gb 4g iPod, Canon i950, Canon S230 "elph", Canon LIDE30, Logitech MX510, Logitech z5500, M-Audio Sonica Theater, Samsung 191T
PC: AMD "barton" XP @ 2.3ghz, 1gb pc3200, 9800pro 128mb, 120gb WD-SE 120gb
Xbox: 1.6, modded with X3 xecuter, slayers evoX 2.6, WDSE 120gb HDD
