Sorry for that
today, iwent to one apple reseller, played around with all of the ibook, and power book;however i found the screen quality is not that good, especially for 12inch even i have ask one staff turn the contrast to highest, but still found the characters are not showing clearly; Then i went to another apple center, compared ibook 12' and 14" with other PC laptop(nearly same prize), i found the PCs screen shows much better,eg,more bright, good contrast, all the characters are pretty good,i know this is a mac forum, sorry for that ,and i am really love mac, i even brought the money with me today(buy it at once )
So all the ibook owner, do you find that? or Are there any way for resolving that?
There were once four people named Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody. Somebody had to do a job, but Nobody wanted to do it. Nobody could see that Anybody could do it, and Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Nobody ended up doing it, and it so happened that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Wierd, the bright screen always used to be one of the iBook's noted attributes.

iBooks do have very nice bright screens. One of the only negatives that I noticed is it does have a good bit of blurring and stuff when you move things quickly, it's not too bad though. Maybe what you're noticing about the fonts being blurry is Quartz's font antialiasing?

The 12" screen has to be angled just right but for the contrast and low color shades to show up, you have to mess around with the callibration on your 'book (under displays in system preferences, and make sure you click the expert mode box). I noticed a big improvement when I did this.

I just used my coworker's G3 iBook/800 next to my 15" PowerBook 667/DVI after not having used one for a while (I used to have a G3 iBook/500). The iBook's screen is pretty nice and the computer is wonderfully compact.

I'm likely getting a 12" iBook (or PowerBook) as my next portable because I'd use it more because of its extreme portability and I've never used my VGA/DVI/video out except for mirroring.

I have a 12" iBook G4. When I first turned mine on I was disappointed by the screen. First thing to do is angle it correctly, as unfortunately these screens have a fairly narrow optimal viewing angle. Then calibrate the screen, changing the gamma setting from Mac OS default (1.8) to Windows/TV default (2.2). This is a much nicer contrast setting.

Yep. I mostly use my TiBook on a table or on a desk and rarely whip it out for lap usage. I would miss gigabit ethernet if I jump back to a 12" model though as I transfer big stuff between my PB and my desktop PC fairly frequently.

Formerly iBook 12" owner and now PB 12" owner. I agree with the above. It's basically the same screen in PB 12" as in the iBook 12" and I must say the screen isn't one of their strongest cards. Perfectly suitable for daily surfing, typing, etc. but I would prefer an external for any graphical work. "SuperCal" app that you can track down on versiontracker.com helps a lot getting the color in shape, but it doesn't solve the bad angle. Other than that.. well.. the LCD is my only complaint on my PB 12" rev. C., and I am very satisfied overall. No problems recommending this excellent computer.

I believe that a few months after the 12" powerbooks were released, the LCD screens were quietly upgraded to the quality of that of the other powerbooks. the models that you mention seem to be the original display models and so may appear not as good as the current batch of 12" powerbooks.

I have a 12" PowerBook 867Mhz at work and a 12" iBook 1Ghz at home. Both have (IMHO) perfectly acceptable screens for a portable. I also have a G5 with a 20" Cinema display so i don't count on my iBook as my primary machine.
I was concerned about the iBook having a lower quality screen from the Powerbook, but had chacked them out at the Apple Store, and side by side and they seem pretty equal in clarity, brightness and color. All in all, I am very happy with both machines.
The iBook does have superior WIFI capabilities tho.

Actually, does anybody have a nicely calibrated SuperCal or colorsynch profile for their 12" iBook G4 that they could send to me? I've played for hours in SuperCal but can never get it right, and I've seen other iBooks with much better profiles.

my school just got 30 12" ibook G4s, and all of them look SO sexy. I havn't had a problem with the dispaly, except that I have noticed that the few flat panel imacs we have at school, when their LCD first wakes up, it's kinda dim and then gets brighter after some use. was the computer display asleep when u went to it?? just a thought. get it, it's an AWSOME machine, especially if u travel, so light, so powerful, so BEAUTIFUL!!

My wife has a 15" Compaq Presario 915us from November 2002, and I've got an iBook 14" 933mhz from November 2003. Both screens look bright and crisp in a single light source room. I have no preference for either screen. I've done plenty of 12 hour marathons on both the iBook and the Compaq, and didn't suffer eye strain from either.

So, I can't relate to clairty observations made. I have noticed side viewing angles to be good on the iBook, and poor on the Compaq. The but up/down angles on the iBook were not as great as its sides, but were still better than the Compaq's.

I found the iBook's screens looked less impressive in Apple's stores because of all the bright ambient light and reflective surfaces. Once home with limited incandescent sources (like one light bulb, or 4 bulbs in a ceiling fan), it looked tons better. In direct sunlight, I could turn the backlight off and read just fine, but in too much ambient and indirect light mixing, the iBook becomes difficult to read. The Compaq doesn't handle direct or indirect lighting at all, so even in the worst conditions, the iBook's screen still looks better.

At the Apple store the ambient light is too bright. With my iBook at home other when next to an open window I turn down the brightness.

The only thing I don't like about the iBook screen on my 14" 1.2 is the shadows in the lower left and right corners. The backlight in that area has a bright spot with a shadow in those corners. I took it back to the Apple Store where I bought it and they said that was within tolerable manufacturing specs. They entered it into their computer in case of future need. I noticed several floor models with the shadows in the lower corners, even some PBs so I didn't argue much with them.
