Does the iBook G4 suffer from the Same Logic Board problems as the G3 iBooks?

After battling Apple for nearly two years and FIVE logicboard replacements, Apple finally replaced my G3 iBook 800 MHz with a brand new 1 GHz iBook G4. However, I have lost ALL confidence in the iBook model.
Has ANYONE reported the imfamous logicboard problems or ANY other problems with the new iBook G4s?

My friend had the problem on his G4 800 but they replaced under the logic board replacement thing. When I bought my 1Ghz I asked if they had seen any of these come back with logic board problems and they said no..I'm guessing it was fixed for this model.

bottom line it would not happen as they are redesigned as far as the area of effect goes.

i'm right with you yoyo, my ibook g3 is dead again. i've go no confidence in the ibook line any more, two ibooks and multiple repair trips on the books. not looking forward to making yet another tonight.
"bottom line it would not happen as they are redesignedas far as the area of effect goes."
that's california dreaming, my friend. how long was the G3 line around? you're telling me they just made a little goof and then decided not to fix it, from the 500mhz model clear through the 900? this little logic board repair problem has cost them big bucks. i would sure hope they'd make it a priority in the G4 'book, but that's far from a guarantee.
so i'll ask too, any G4 ibook owners who had to replace logic boards out there? i'm sure it happens sometimes, but not at the epidemic levels of the G3, i hope. maybe i won't have to switch away from apple...

And the newer G4 ibooks (12" 1.07Ghz) have been redesigned when compared to the G4 800 12". They have more cache on the board, a faster system bus and 256mb of ram soldered on, rather than 128mb. I've never heard of any problems with the 2004 iBooks. I love mine, I take it anywhere and everywhere, and use it for everything from Internet\word processing to video editing and 3D games.

Spoke with Apple Customer Relations today, total waste of time. Seems it's all-or-nothing when it comes to a response. If you haven't hit a third repair that has to be sent away, too bad. So I guess I should hope that the loud "chunk" sound from my hard drive results in drive failure? Time to give Sony another look.

Sorry to hear your having sooooo many problems, but I empathize. I went through their crap for TWO YEARS before they FINALLY agreed to replace it.
So far, things have been good. It's been nearly a month and no problems so far. However, I have decided to make weekly backups of the Hard Drive using Carbon Copy Cloner; just in case. I figure, I'll be convinced the problem is fixed if I can make it nine months without a logicboard failure.

The problem isn't with the logic board, per se, it's with the way the video cable goes through the hinge assembly. Unless they re-designed that part of it (and I dont' see how they could, really) it will be a problem in the future.

That's true, and I did have the hinge-wire problem as well. Sure annoying, but at least your machine still works until you can get it repaired. Logic board futzes out, you're lucky to be able to do a quick back-up before it kicks over again.
I shouldn't complain so much. I haven't gotten any hassle about fixing it under warranty. So happy not to have to deal with some 3rd-party warranty company, plenty extra nightmare there. They had to send my iBook off for repair, but it looks like it might be back in less than a week. Pretty impressive. Just so sick of going begging to Apple to get it right.

I would avoid apple laptops in general. I had a 5300 which was sent in 3 times for logic board failure. They finally gave me a grey g3 free in exchange. That had a faulty power pack within a week, then it needed a logic board replacing and then there was a recall on the new power pack. So I finally bought a g3 ibook which then needed a new logic board after a year. Apple did replace it for free, but it took 5 weeks and a dozen phone calls. They didn't put it together properly and I now have a splitting power cord. I have tried writing numerous letters to apple which all have gone unanswered. I wouldn't hold my breath on the g4's being any better, or their customer service improving.

I had all of the above problems on my iBook G3 700 mhz purchased in Aug 2002. In Nov of 2003, after numerous repairs, I had it replaced with a 1ghz G4 Powerbook. I had to pay $300 for the upgrade, but like you I did not have confidence in another iBook, even if it was a G4. So far my Powerbook has given me no problems, other than a little bolt that fell out.
I would encourage those of you who can afford it to ask for the Powerbook upgrade and pay the extra cash. It was worth it for me. Besides, I don't like the feel of the materials used on the new iBook...
