Hi everyone...

Well, I'm Chris. My 12" Powerbook comes today. I used to use PCs, of course. I have no mac experience (OSX or otherwise), so I am hoping the learning curve isn't too steep after being a Windows user for so long.

I still can't get over the fact that hitting Enter on an icon doesn't open that file.

I've been lurking for a while, and it seems to me this forum is a gigantic help. But now I'm terrified of getting dead pixels in my laptop.

Hope I can become a contributing member of your society!

-Chris

You'll LOVE working on OSX. I switched not so long ago myself, and couldn't be happier. Now I actually have computers that run ...

This forum was of great help to me. I have learned many many things thanks to the experience and knowledge of these MacNN'ers. Remember to do a search before creating a new thread, because many issues are likely to have been discussed already. If you don't find anything just ask away and you'll get the advice you need.

Let us know when you get your 12"PB and Welcome !!

stuffing feathers up your b*tt doesn't make you a chicken.

Hi Chris

Welcome (if i may be so bold after only been a Mac user for 6 weeks or so).

My 12" PB has changed my way of thinking, I still use the peeeceee but only for the boring, leave it alone to do its own thing type stuff.

As for the dead pixel, I had one on mine (stuck on red, just below the menu bar), hardly noticable, which rubbed out anyways. The post tip i read is if you do have a stuck pixel, disguise it with wallpaper (or should i say desktop picture now).

Good luck with the new machine.

A N Other Chris

I intend on buying a PC soon, too. Desktop - nothing intense, and my passion has always been portable technology. But I like having a workstation of sorts to go about my business, and sometimes you just need Windows (to many people's dismay).

So I was thinking about one of those really crappy Dell's that will end up costing me something like $800. LOTS of RAM, no Celeron, big HD, no burner, etc.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yeah same here, mine is primarily used for achiving and the subsequent burning of discs. It also acts a host for my router.

The PB is mine though, nice for lazing on the sofa or the deck out back and surfing the web, also great for looking at photos as you have taken them, as it all packs away nicely into my camera bag.

Girlfriend is pretty impressed too, even though she hit the roof when the credit card bill landed with £1200 on it, hey its only money and we only live once.

I catch on quick, so let's just hope.

I'm so excited. It's 2 hours away from my house as we speak.

When I got my first mac (and I'll NEVER go back to PC willingly) my mistake was that I tried to make the change more difficult than it was! Once I understood the simplicity of the mac, I realized that it is the most simple, organized way to compute. So, don't make it too hard on yourself - just love the ease and logical file structure, etc. Enjoy -- and Welcome!

A few words to the wise:

Once you have booted and filled in the various info your asked for, and are at your desktop, go to the Help menu in the menubar at the top of the screen and open Mac Help. There is a section for people new to MacOS X and new to the Mac. It will be a useful backup resource for you.

Edit - fwiw, to open a file or application that you have selected, simply press command-O (command is the apple/cloverleaf key to the immediate left or right of the spacebar).
