Called into my local friendly Applecentre yesterday (Australia) to place an order for a 17" powerbook, only to be told that the wait will be at least 2 weeks if not more. They confirmed after calling other stores that all they could offer me at the moment 1 (one only) 15" combo. Checking the Australian Apple dealer site, they could see that 39 15" superdrive powerbooks would be available in 8 days, but no mention of any 17". If it means a wait of a few weeks to receive the new (if any) updated powerbook, so be it. I am not in any great hurry as long as I have it by mid October.
Any comments!

Who knows what it means. It might mean that supply right now is low with cram and jam and everything else running. It's summer and a lot of students are purchasing new machines. I wouldn't be supprised if it's just a supply chain problem. I'm hoping this is the case

I'm hoping it's just supply also. Hate for my new 17 to be behind the times after a week.
But it's pretty tight to find PBs. I was looking for a 15 with superdrive and they were sold out so I was offered a 17 at the same price as the 15.

It's supply... The Australian 17" and 15" Powerbooks were in high demand and stocks have been running low but are now coming from Singapore... (literally as we discuss this)

New PowerBook 31 August?? Unlikely...
Firstly, Apple Australia never get enough PowerBook for Australian market. Don't ask me why, perhaps Apple Australia didn't know all the AFL footballers and coaches uses PowerBook for the football review and video replay, and underestimate the number of users?
Also, if you look carefully at the Apple PowerBook battery recall notice, it affects the 15" PowerBook, and affects PowerBook manufactured up to August 2004 (i.e. right now! ) I guess Apple just discover the battery problem within the last few days, and they have to put all the 15" stock on hold, until the replacement battery is available, get someone open each PowerBook packaging box and replace the battery, and then reseal it... it takes a lot of time!
I don't know if 17" PowerBook use the battery of the same form factor as the 15" one (take the 17" battery into 15"??), but I really think the battery recall problem plays some part of the delay. If Apple are planned to release a new PowerBook real soon, the battery recall problem would put the release back for a few weeks.
Finally, new iMac in September... don't forget... I don't think Apple would get side tracked and release two consumer level products around the same time.

Sort of unrelated: but dosen't anything with "Power" in front of it refer to a "professional" product, as opposed to the "i" consumer products?

Yup, that would pretty much be the way of it.

Yeap. You are right!
Not sure why I made the bizarre comment?!?!
Perhaps most of my brain cells was dead when I type my last post on a Friday night, after a full work of work??

I've had my new 17" for a couple of months now and had to wait over 2 weeks for it when delivery times in the States were on 3 to 5 days. Don't know why - I am guessing that all Australian PowerBooks are treated as some sort of built to order so that there is no running stock whereas as Apple USA keeps a large amount of stock in warehouses and ships mostly from there.
Its frustrating but worth the wait.
