I am setting up a home wireless network. My wife uses a blueberry clamshell ibook (333 g3, OS 9.2) It does not have an airport card.
If I buy the old-school airport card for her computer, it will cost a bundle (~150, I think) and it will only do 802.11b. Is it possible to get a USB wireless adapter so she can have 802.11g? If so, what models do folks recommend?

That computer has USB 1.1 which is limited to 11Mb/s so 802.11g is out of the question. USB is 802.11b speeds though so you could probably pickup a USB 802.11b device for pretty cheap. Don't know of any that work with mac off the top of my head though.

Ethernet bridges do exist, but I don't think they'll be any cheaper than an Airport card, and they sure as hell won't be more convenient. Unless you have a specific need for 802.11g, I suggest you stick with b. Your internet connection likely doesn't come close to saturating even b.

thats a great point. something that a lot of people really seem to miss. the g only really comes in in the context of a local network. unless you move HUGE files between computers, i really dont see a huge demand for the added speed.
it is aggravating that apple gave up making airport cards.

I agree.
Try eBay, CompUSSR, or Worst Buy.

You might indeed try a product like the Linksys WET11 Wireless Ethernet Bridge, but keep in mind that it would use up the clamshell's only available USB port, and might be flaky if used with a USB hub.

What are you talking about? The WET11 is an ethernet bridge, not USB.

You're right, of course. Duh. Sorry.
Still, the WET11 is a good option because it DOESN'T take up a USB port.
