No need to defrag HFS+ unless you do a lot of video editing.
If you do try to do it on a drive other than the boot drive and defrag that as needed.
I don't know of any free defrag for HFS.

i run onyx regularly, definitely helps (and has some nice options).
there are other apps like it (including the not-free but excellent cocktail).
defragging is, as stated above, not necessary in osx (but we still do it on external drives with film work)

Actually I DO a lot of video editing. Might I ask what defragging utility you use on your exterior drives?

tech tool pro has an optimizer/defragger. (and is a great diagnostic tool, of course)
btw, can take a LOOOONNNG time to defrag...

DiskWarrior is pretty speedy. I rarely use it on the main hard drive, but it seems to help much more on smaller drives, such as the iPod as well as the externals.

Since I used onyx the last time my Applications, Documents etc. folders don't show their icon in the finder sidebar. They simply appear like a standard folder icon.
So onyx does not seem to be completely bug free.
Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?

Not sure what you mean. To stop the items appearing as icons without columns I first select the right view they should be in. Next I select the little gear in the top of the finder window. Next I uncheck Show Icons. I then restart. Next I do the same but recheck show icons. Items should now appear in column fashion with icons, details, etc from now on. Not sure if that is a bug. When I got my Powerbook brand new it only displayed the icon view window. You simply erased the computers memory to do it your way when you used ONYX. You must re-customize to your liking.

I would try dragging all of the things with corrupted icons out of the bar and then reinserting them from file.
