You'll need either a hub, switch, or a crossover cable, I believe. The new powerbooks might be able to do a software crossover, but I'm not sure.

Don't the PowerBooks have self-sensing Ethernet ports? That is to say, they know whether they've got a cross-over or straight patch cable plugged in and route themselves accordingly?

Well, try it and see if it works... the time you spend posting on here, you could be getting it to work

You do not need a cross over cable. If you go to Apple's support site you can find all the info you need to do what you want. Here's one example: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42717

all i keep finding is how to transfer form mac to mac, not pc to mac...and i just tried the "just plug em in" thing...it didn't work..

this was on Apple's Website:

To transfer files from a Windows PC to a Mac (or from a Mac to a Mac) you can:
-Open a network connection: Connect to a Windows network and transfer files from one computer to the other.

i love how they don't tell you how...so this means i should be able to just hook them up by ethernet, right?

k, i found one thing, the move2mac, but that is ridiculous, there has got to be a way just by hooking them up together..

hook em together, on your mac in finder go to "Go>connect to server" and type in smb://<i>insert pc's address here (ex. 192.168.1.100)</i> and that should do it.. on the windows computer u have to have sharing enabled and the files u want need to be shared. (u should be able to find the remote address of the pc somewhere in the shared settings. routers make it so much easier.

First things first. On the Mac go to System Preferences>Sharing>Services and make sure you have activated "Windows sharing". While you are there, and have highlighted Windows sharing by clicking the title itself, make a note of the computer address (which will be something like \\yourcompsname.domain.whatever\yourshortusername) which is displayed at the bottom of the window.

You then might find it easier to access the Mac from the PC considering that you now know the Mac's address. On the PC go to My Network Places and create a new Network place for the Mac using the Mac's address above. You will probably be asked for your username and password to mount it on the PC. Your user folder should then mount on the PC and you can copy files too and from it.

Sorry, but I don't know what you need to do on the PC side to make sure you can use the networking in this way (that is to make My Network Places actually function), if this doesn't work.

HTH

Nope. If you are in the Sharing preferences, with the Services tab active - click the title "Windows Sharing" and you will see this:

Red box highlights what you want to input as the Mac's address

on windows its a folder called Shared Documents inside of my computer (assuming u got xp with older versions i don't know) just put the files u want in that folder, btw if ethernet is connected and windows sharing is turned on in mac os x then u're pc should show up in the "network" tab in finder. i could help more but i've never hooked up mac to pc direct ethernet, i've always gone through a router (hense the smb://192.168.1.100 is how u would access using a router)

just for reference

to get your ip on a pc... go to start>run>(type cmd then enter)>type ipconfig then enter

ip on a mac, probably an easier way, but you can go to terminal/console and type ifconfig then enter
