I was looking into replacing the internal HD on an old Dual USB iBook, but honestly, I'm a bit unsure of what will or won't work with the computer. I've heard good things about the IBM Travelstars and 40GNXs, but I didn't know if they had the right interfaces or whatnot to match up with my particular model. Anyway, could anyone help me out a little bit and point me to the right model? I'm looking for a 30 or 40GB 4200RPM hard drive, so does anyone know exactly which model I need?

Basically, anything that's listed as a 2.5" IDE drive will work. That includes the IBM Travelstars.

So it doesn't make a difference if it's ATA-5 or ATA-6 or something? I also know that it needs to be at or under 9.5mm, but other than that, dunno.

Ok, so we bought a Travelstar, followed the instructions on the site that we were directed to in regards to installation (ran into one glitch...accidentally broke the trackpad connector...dunno if we can fix it), but now, after formatting the disk and trying to install Panther, it says that we can't install Mac OS because we cannot start up from the disk. Like, it shows the HD as an option on the screen for when you select which disk to install the OS on, but it has the red exclamation point thing and tells us we can't install it. I just tried installing 10.0 though, and it doesn't seem to have any issues. The 10.0 installation is going on right now, so I don't know if we'll run into any issues later with installing Panther, but does anyone have any idea what happened?

Could be, I suppose, but we managed to get 10.0 installed without a hitch and Panther went in easily after that. Never gave us another complaint, so I tend not to think that it was slave/master settings giving us a problem, though I could be wrong.

I had a similar problem after installing a new 40GB Toshiba in my 500Mhz iBook. After fitting the driver I switched on and booted via the Panther CD, used Disk Utility to format the drive and then tried to carry on installing Panther.
Bit of a shock when the installer said I couldn't install on my new drive! However appears you have to format the new drive, restart and then install the OS. Worked like a dream!
