I have a ti550 combo , it has a 16mb radeon mobility graphic card.

My screen is now officially dead

So I have attached a 15inch lcd to it, and I am running off external keyboard and mouse from an old iMac DV

I have no issue buying another keyboard for the powerbook, and using it as a desktop, because I'm thinking rather than replacing it with say an ibook 12inch combo, I could spend £450 on a large 19inch LCD.

Two things, there is nothing wrong with the performance of the PB for what I use it for, and when I do upgrade having a decent monitor would mean I could look at a low end Powermac in a couple of years time

My concern is that the graphics card cannot power a resolution of 1280x1040 in millions of colours. Does anyone know if the machine will power this resolution?

If not, what is the highest I could go?

Or is it best to buy a £450 monster CRT like a Lacie Blue?

All I do is office, surf, iphoto, itunes a little photoshop and illustrator, watch DVD's

Nearly forgot, OS 10.3, 512mb, upgraded to 60gb HD
and suffering the wosre case of paint flake I think possilbe...

(1280 x 1040 pixels) x 4 bytes/pixel = 5.3 MB for just the frame buffer. I don't know if the remaining VRAM would be enough for Quartz Extreme, but your PB should certainly be able to drive that resolution. Heck, it's a Powerbook. Bring it to a store and ask if you can try it out on a display model.
