A while back I was frustrated with the dead optical drive on my Powerbook Pismo (aka Powerbook firewire/2000). The stock LG drive died, an experience shared by many, many Pismo owners. So I figured out how to replace the drive with a combo drive and wrote about it here:

I since sold that Pismo and went on with my life....until I inherited another Pismo. I truely love this machine and decided I would turn this little notebook into my primary laptop. So besides RAM, HD and airport upgrades (look at my sig for more info on that) I decided it was time to replace the dead LG drive. I went onto ebay and won an auction for a Toshiba SD-R2102. A few days after the auction I got an email from the seller saying the drive was all sold out, but he was offering a Toshiba SD-2212 instead. It's a faster and nicer drive. This drive goes for about $150 (give or take $20-30). I paid $80 for the ebay auction. Tech specs here:

Following my own instructions, I replaced the optical drive and I'm currently importing music from a CD. According to ASP, this is a native, Apple supported drive. w00t! w00t! w00t!
So, I am happy.
