Well since there was nothing at my local CompUSA, I went ahead and bought a stick of 256MB 200-pin PC2100 RAM from Crucial. It is what they recommended. So ok, a lot of people have had good experiences with them so I ordered it. I was pretty happy to recieve it today, but then found out my keyboard was stuck. So while still in the case, we brought it to the Pasadena Apple Store.
When we got there, we waited an hour ten minutes for a genius. ok, as long as we get this keyboard flipped up. so he did it, and he said he could kind of walk me through the parts and so we finally got to the RAM.
My sister took it out of the bag, I grounded myself, and we pushed it in. I showed the genius and he said it looked fine, and he took it back out and put it back in. I brought all the tools I needed (flat head screw and #0 philips) and we put the iBook back together. i breathed a sigh of relief.
so i turned it on, apple->about this mac
to my surprise it said:
384MB RAM!!! this is an iBook G4 by the way, so 256+256=512
on the RAM reciept, the RAM package, and the email they sent me it all said 256MB! I was about to cry, seriously. i just paid 58 dollars for a stick of 128MB RAM? the genius installed an apple RAM to check if it was the RAM or the computer, and it was the RAM.
my sister is leaving for China and is taking the iBook with her in less than one week, so we had no time to get another stick and install it in time, so we had to take the Apple RAM. :sigh: 100 dollars for a 256MB stick. Stayed at the apple store for 3 hours figuring this out.
i am looking for a full refund from Crucial, including sales tax. i hope they are a good company in that sense
the Apple RAM works flawlessly though, so I guess i can't complain. all said and done, everything is fine now

So you got bad RAM. It happens.
It's not Crucial's fault your sister is going to China in a week.

Yeah, and that's why they'll either give you a refund or replace it. I don't know if they give refunds, but I had to have mine replaced and they did it cheerfully.

When i bought my 512 powerbook upgrade everyone said crucial was the way to go. So I bought it and my system would crash about 3 times a day (kernel panic) - so anyway I had to call them up to ask for an exchange and I had to give my story about how everything worked fine until i upgraded my ram and then they finally gave me an exchange - which has worked fine. so crucial.com is okay - but they are not perfect.

I bought a 512 stick from Crucial when I bought my iBook 1.2 back in June. Works fine. No system crashes yet.
In the past I've bought Crucial for PCs. I did have one 128m stick on a PC that wasn't right and caused the PC to crash. They replaced it without any problem and the replacement is still working fine today 4 years later.

You shoulda looked for someone with a 15" PB trying to get rid of one of their 256 chips instead of buying them from crucial or other ram dealers. Lot's owners would be thrilled to sell their 256MB chips for $30, oh well....live n learn I guess.
