I bought a 17" PB just over a week ago. I was shocked at the extent to which I very quickly became emotionally attached to it; as a Windows switcher, I was blown away by the world of difference. Where PCs are functional, this was elegant. I realised what it was that Mac users have always banged on about. I was in love with the thing.
Three days ago, I was happily surfing on Safari with Launch Bar and the Finder window open, when all of a sudden everything slowed to a crawl. I couldn't close any apps and had to force shutdown. On reboot, it took 20 minutes to get to the desktop, then another 10 to build the menu bar and dock.
I decided I must have installed something in the wrong place, or inadvertently deleted an important system file, so I decided to archive and reinstall: it was having none of it. So I tried a clean erase and install - same story. It would hang at the same point every time.
I phoned Apple, and they said I may have faulty hardware. Today, a courier came and took it away to be mended. Now all I have is a home-built PC which makes as much noise as a Lancaster bomber, regularly freezes and offers me none of the tactile pleasure of the PowerBook.
This all started when I bought an iPod and was so taken with its purity and excellence (even the packaging) that I felt the need to look at Apple's computers.
OK I admit it, I should grow up and get some perspective. But how about a hug anyway?
