Could post this in any forum, but since the machine in question is a Pismo:

Came home after a bike ride, turned on the computer and was greeted with the harddrive making sounds like it's got something scraping across its insides. I start up with my TechTool Pro CD and am able to recover the drive, but it finds all sorts of **** wrong, and when it rebuilds the directories I am missing 2 gigs of data.

Is my harddrive dying?

It would certainly appear so.
I would get all of the remaining data off of that thing ASAP.

Sounds like a head crash.
