I have a 1ghz al powerbook and a western digital usb 2.0 external hard drive. I used carbon copy cloner to clone my system to the drive but now my mac wont boot to it. After looking around the web for a while it looks like os x cant boot to a usb drive, is this true?
Unfortunately, it is true.
I believe it actually isn't OS X's problem but rather Open Firmware's problem.
Anyways, as far as external drives, you can only boot off of Firewire or Network drives.
I can boot a PowerBook G3 Pismo from a USB drive into OS 9. The trick was to initialize the USB drive as HFS+ and "Install drivers for OS 9" from X's Disk Utility on a 9 bootable machine. Then install and bless a 9 System Folder and select it as the startup disk in the control panel. So, it doesn't seem to be an Open Firmware limitation. -JP
