Hi,
If you upgrade your hard drive on your titanium, do you need to keep and replace the original hard drive to send it back for an applecare service. I would like to upgrade the hard drive on a titanium that has applecare but do not want to void the warranty. I know that on titaniums, the hard drive should be user upgradeable, but the question is do I have to keep the original hard drive in there?
Have any of you sent in your Ti's with your upgraded hard drive?
Also, on a tangent, if I wanted to replace the bottom case of the ti, does that void warranty?
Thanks!

Don't know about a Ti specifically, but I sent in my upgraded pismo with for HD unrelated repair and that wasn't a problem. In my experience, Apple care doesn't nitpick and won't void a warranty for minor, not repair-related issues.
No idea about the bottom case replacement though.

Agreed. Apple doesn't care if it's unrelated. Just make sure you note if you ever send the thing in for warranty repair that the drive is not theirs.
Apple also won't care if you replace the bottom case.

Hi,
So it seems that I can upgrade the hard drive, and then sell the original hrd drive right? Also, what if the hard drive doesn't have an apple logo on it, is that okay also?
Thanks!!

Hi,
How about the dvd drive? If I wanted to upgrade to a combo or even superdrive would those void the warranty?
Thanks!

In the titanium, the HD is user-installable, so it doesn't affect your applecare (as long as the issue isn't related to the HD.) On the other hand, if you've still got applecare for the Ti-550, rather than putting in a DVD-R drive, maybe you should consider selling it off with the original HD inside (putting your replacement HD in an external case.) It's easier to sell an older PB if it's still got some applecare.
Even an iBook nowadays will be faster and have more features (such as internal Bluetooth, if you CTO from the store). On top of that, amazon.com is offering $150 rebates on some models, notably the Rev B 12" ibook and even on the current Rev C 12" PB (check the links at macintouch.com)
If you don't want to do that, then consider buying a Pioneer DVR-108 16-X burner, and putting it in a firewire case. You can find the burner for $94 and a case for $50. Much better speed and much, much better price than the internal replacement.

Hi,
Thanks for your advice... I was thinking of just selling the titanium as you said, and keep my pismo which is also in mint condition. The thing I figured was that both the titanium and pismo are pretty easily upgradeable, but since the pismo is an older machine, older batteries are harder and pricier to find. I have 2 extra batteries for the titanium holding 3-4 hour charges on each.
Of course the widescreen is also more attractive with the titanium, and then the applecare which will last me through jan 2005. I just want to hold on to something that will be reliable until the g5 powerbooks will be stable (prob. not rev a).
I'm even thinking of selling the airport card in the titanium just to keep the cheapest laptop possible.
i really appreciate all your opinions, so keep more coming.
Thanks

Ah, now that's a different scenario altogether. Especially true about waiting past the rev a model.
Frankly, now's a good time to sell your Ti-550 because it still has Applecare till January.
Why not sell both the Ti and the Pismo and have a decent 12" iBook with or without an external monitor while you're waiting for the G5 PB to have been beta tested on the first buyers?
