So... I reckon I could sell my (1ghz rev. a) 17" powerbook on ebay for the same as it would cost to buy a 20" iMac G5.

Think is, I usually use it at my desk so portability of 17" is not really an issue.

I'm pretty sure the iMac G5 would be an improvement, but how much?

I use apps like Safari, Photoshop, SubEthaEdit, iPhoto, iTunes, Entourage, Words etc and just recently Panther is slowing down on this Rev A 17"

What does everyone reckon? Stick with the Powerbook or buy an iMac G5?

P.S. I looove the design. What could I expect the performance increase to be? 80% just on the faster processor, but then we have faster hard drive, bus speed, etc etc

Sell the PowerBook, get the iMac and if you have some money left buy a second hand iBook for you portable needs (or a new one, whatever suits you).

Yep! I would totally get the iMac G5 + a nice used/new laptop.

I'll be a dissenting voice just for the sake of dissenting.

If the PB fits your needs, I'd stick with it, first you need to sell the PB. Right now the waiting is around 3 - 4 weeks, but what if that gets pushed back.

Also your going to be on the bleeding edge of a new design that apple addmittedly had heat issues, which is why they delayed it.

I'd be content with the PB, and wait for other people to find the bugs on the iMac.

I went from a G4 iBook to a 17PB 2 weeks after getting a deal too good to pass up (17 + Applecare for the price of a 15). I thought about getting the iMac and a used 12 ibook G4 or PB but decided that I'd still rather have the portability, even in a 17, and let the bugs get worked out on the iMac.
I have to admit that the price is very attractive and I like the form factor, but I think I'll stick with my G4 until a) the PowerBook G5s come out b) the revb iMacs, which willl likely go to 2Ghz and possibly add the wi-fi/bluetooth options as standard.
