There were once four people named Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody. Somebody had to do a job, but Nobody wanted to do it. Nobody could see that Anybody could do it, and Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Nobody ended up doing it, and it so happened that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

This is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the correct forum for your question.

wataru, I completely agree with you, but before you post this, look at the person posting. He/she has 6 posts (at the time I am writing this) which means he/she is a new person here. He/she is probably new to the Mac as well and probably just purchased an iBook, so they came to this forum. So maybe next time when you type your response, you could be a little nicer about it and say something like this:
"That is a good question, but it should belong in the Software forum. If you do not know how to get there, look at the bottom of this page, it lists all the forums there. Just find the software forum and click on it. You might already find your answer there before posting. Hope this helps!"
Now your response wataru wasn't as rude as some people's have been on this forum. But it also didn't help the person to correct his behavior in the future by just telling him/her wrong forum.
Good luck in your search maCCer

Anyways, as this should have been in the software forum, as long as its here I'll answer it.
Appleworks is kind of a lame program that hasn't really been updated in a while. If your a student, you can get office 2004 for only $150 (and that has 3 licensed installs). If your not a student, the price is about $400. But if you are a student, I'd say go for it, its a great suite.

Better compatibility between Mac and Windows. If you use Office and share files, presentations, etc. with other people or have the need to open other peoples files that where made in Office you should get it. If the only thing you need is to type the occasional paper, etc. stick with AppleWorks. It comes with the iBook for free. It will work for almost every average user.
If you deceide to use AppleWorks check these programs out:
http://www.panergy-software.com/prod.../welcome1.html
http://www.panergy-software.com/prod...cel/index.html
They have a free trial download. The full version will cost you about $40 for both of them. Beats $150 or $400 anyday.
If you save a document using the word processor in AppleWorks just make sure you save it in a RTF (Rich Text Format) so users of other office suites will be able to open it. It might lose some format but at least they can open it.
If you can find a great deal on the previous version of Office Mac which was Office v.x (not 2004) you would probably be better off. IMO 2004 doesn't have enough extra features to pay the price.
Good luck with your decisioin.

Wataru, give him a break!
If you afford it go for office. It is overkill for most people but it works well and if you are sending and receiving many office attachments then it is really the only way to go...

If you don't mind a fugly GUI, OpenOffice.org is a very good alternative.
It's an open source project, full office package, and it's free. I find it sufficient for my usage, but I don't use it like every day, so the GUI and its dependents on X11 is not a big trade off for me. Once its up and running, it feels similar to some Windows application in usage IMHO – it gets the job done.

Rather than OpenOffice.org, I recommend NeoOffice/J. It's OpenOffice.org modified to behave more like a native Mac application.
