I bought a plug and play 120GB 5400 rpm USB 2.0 harddrive recently and plugged it in to the laptop and it worked fine. Then after awhile then plug and play just stopped registering. I've tried installing the optional drivers that came with it with no success, I cleaned all the ports and even tried installing old usb drivers, no, I bought a notebook usb hub nothing, I switched usb cables and that worked once (but has not worked since) and restarting does nothing. I have done just about everything I can think of.... The time has come for me to seek HELP!!

Well, G3 ibooks do not have USB2 so I don't know how wise it was getting a 5400RPM drive since you'll only get USB 1 speeds. And if your USB ports are working which can be checked by plugging in other USB devices then I would say the cause is the external drive not the iBook. What brand is this thing and what kind of warranty do you have on it?

I needed harddrive space cause I only have a 30gb (and I have lots and lots of music and media files) drive and this one was reasonably priced. It is a bason computer 120GB 5400rpm drive with plug n play support and a one year warranty I bought it in July 2004. I don't have apple care anymore and really can't afford to buy a new computer right at this moment.

What if I changed the enclosure on the External harddrive so that I got firewire support instead? Would that sound feasible?

I would always go with firewire or a combo case. But if that external drive is under warranty I would take it back and use that money to buy a firewire case and hard drive and put it together yourself. It might be cheaper.
