Hello, I've always thought when I start-up my powerbook the ding sound seems to come more from the left hand side (almost attracting my attention that way) but soon forgotten about, untill last night!

with my nose pushed up against the keyboard the left side speaker is stronger than the right even though balance is set to centre.

Is there any bit of software which can help me to take/make a proper reading.

(I hope it's not my ears, will turn the powerbook other way round tonight)

Thanks.

I know on the newer 15" PowerBooks, the speakers are not located symmetrically, and that could be affecting your impression. Also, there is a "woofer" that is located off center; I don't recall off the top of my head which side... I haven't been inside many of those yet.

You can change the balance in the Output tab of the Sound System Preference.

If you have a 15" Aluminum PowerBook, then yes, the speakers aren't balanced. The third speaker is off-center to the left, under the keyboard.

As long as you don't stick your face to the keyboard to compare.

I just noticed this same issue with my PB 1.5 15". How lame...

Any fixes to this Mr. Jobs?

I find that my speaker balance on my current-generation PowerBook actually drifts to the left. Like, I'll go into the Sound prefpane, and it'll be halfway over.

The speaker output drift is a Tiger bug AFAIK. It is being discussed in the Tiger bug thread.
