all rechargable batteries will die in a couple of years whether you use them or not

Here's a better answer, I hope: Most of the these batteries start losing capacity after 18-24 months, so expect to need to replace them. I would recommend getting one of the new high capacity batteries that Newer Tech makes. The 7200mAh one was recently announced and is in stock at Other World Computing for $160. It has 50% more capacity than the original battery. Sales: 800.275.4576

MrForgetable is right, though: ALL Lithium-Ion batteries lose capacity over time, whether you use them or not. (Yes, one that's used may lose capacity faster.) You cannot stop this.

Obviously, if you start with the highest-capacity battery out there, then as you lose capacity, you won't be as bad off as with a lower-capacity battery.

Actually, not using LiIon batteries makes their life shorter. See this link for more tips on using LiIon batteries:

I looked it up because I got my PowerBook back from AppleCare telling me that I had gone through too many charge/discharge cycles, which I knew was BS. That's another story regardless. My battery seems to be doing fine still with approximately 4-5 hours of battery life.
