Well, my PB will not stay on for more then 1 minute! I have ran the hardware test cd, verified/fixed permissions, checked the disk, everything looks good. Luckily I was able to backup most, if not all, of my files last night. Last thing I need is my most recent versions of my programs to go down the drain... Anyone have a clue what could be going on? My next step is to reinstall OS X. Any thoughts?

Have you installed new ram? What about running DiskWarrior?

Sorry about the info, here it is:

1.5Ghz 15" Alu w/ 10.3.5

I have not added anything, hardware or software, since first getting this machine a few months ago. This has just started happening in the past week.

DiskWarrior is a little out of the question at this time... Is this enough info now?

Well right now it is actually working... It will randomly put up the crash window and you have to restart it. I am going to backup my data again and just wipe the drive and start over unless someone has another suggestion.

you could call apple for help...

have you added ram?
what peripherals do you have? try unplugging everything (but the ac!) and see if this still happens.

try holding down the shift key when you boot up (until you see the spinning icon on the bottom of the screen for a minute).

work a bit, see how things run.

a reinstall may not be a bad idea...

Yeah I guess calling Apple is an option... The only thing plugged into this sucker is the power cord. Nothing added since I bought it... Oh well, stuff happens sometimes!

If it doesn't crash, try creating a new user profile and see what happens. That at least might let you know if the problem is software- or hardware-related.

It has not crashed since I posted earlier today... I updated to whatever Software Update had in it just in case. Oh well, maybe it will fix itself, otherwise I will be reinstalling OS X soon.

Update: The crashes started again... I called Apple Tech Support and we narrowed it down to the Airport Extreme card. I tried a buddy of mines and it still crashed. I have done everything short of sending it off to Apple, but I get to do that Monday/Tuesday.

So how long does it usually take to get the pb back?

Before you send it in I would re-seat the RAM memory. Someone did this and it worked for him.
Point two: If you must have it serviced don't send it yourself but have an Apple genius make a record of it's exterior condition and let them send it. They have forms where the condition can be checked off. This way if it comes back scratched no one can say it was that way before it left. Plus when it does return it is their duty to check the problem again when it arrives before they call you up to let you come get it.

Good points, but I have taken out the ram and replaced it and no difference. Unfortunately the closest Apple Store is 300+ miles away... The person I spoke with at Apple filled out a form about the condition of the powerbook. The box should be here tomorrow and off it goes Tuesday. Gotta remember to low level format the drive tomorrow night...

Yet another update. They are still waiting on the part. They spent 3 days looking through their entire inventory and right now I am waiting on the support person to contact the repair center and find out what the hold up is. I dont know what the problem is, but maybe new powerbooks are coming? It would be nice to at least be offered a new powerbook since they dont have the part.... Ahh well, I guess I will keep waiting to see what they say!
