has anyone bought this drive?

does it need patchburn to work? Or did it work natively from the start?

Any info/opinions?

Personally, I'd rather stick that money into an external DVD burner, better bang for the buck.

I just stuck a DVD-108 Pioneer into a firewire case: 16X speed, vs the 2X speed for the internal drive you're looking at. $94 for the DVR-108, $66 for the case, plus some freight.

I know this doesn't answer your question, just thought I'd point out an alternative. Of course, if you need portable, then you need portable.

... but the one from OWC is natively compatible with iLife.

that's primarily the reason I'm getting it.

i wish this wasn't the ONLY option, but there's no other alternatives?

Aren't standard external drives natively compatible with iLife?

I was using Toast to burn backups on the firewire DVR-108, and it was fast, very fast.

Didn't check iLife compatibility, and the drive is no longer in my posession. However, xlr8yourmac.com lists some tricks and patches that allow the drive to work in iDVD, and there are reports that iTunes and iPhoto work as well. Check their database and read the comments, looks like everything should work.

There's links to a French site for upgrading the firmware from the Mac, no need to find a PC to upgrade.
