Fairly new to the PB realm, and have noticed that this thing gets HOT. Just started running Konfabulator, and got a widget called "Temperature Text". Looks like my laptop constantly is at 130-133 degrees F.

So now I'm wondering:

What is a safe temperature range to work within?

Any problems that will come from running this computer at too high of temperature?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

130? That's low! Mine gets to 140 all the time, averaging like 135. Don't worry about it, dude.

If the handrests are not uncomfortably hot I would not worry about it. I remember mine went to 150 (processor temp reading) I think running SETI@home but the fans kept the temp in check. The handrests felt fine even then.

I can not hold my hand on the bottom of my PB. I don't qualify for the battery exchange. I've had me backlit 15" over a year and it seems to just get hotter and hotter than it use to. I use it in 4-6hr stints. The top of the PB is starting to get warm also.

my block charger is also getting hot.

using the Temperature Text widget:
max'd at 146.1

at 145.6 the fan kicked on again.

hovering on 144.9 right now.

The main thing to remember with the AlPB is that it needs air flow around it for cooling. For example, you should put a book or something underneath it if you're using it in bed or lying on the fluffy carpet. Here's a $10 solution, an acrylic lapboard that wouldn't be too hard to carry along--or to just leave next to the couch:

Running seti@home really runs the temperature up, you hear about fans roaring even in the G5 forums, even stories of laptops with forced shutdowns because of high temps. That's gotta make you wonder about excessive wear-and-tear on your precious baby.

what about an active cooler base, the ones with fans in it, would that help?

An iCurve works nicely. My 17 runs about 122 unless I'm grinding away at some intense work or burning a disc.
That said, my old G4 iBook (1Ghz) actually ran almost 10 degrees warmer, on average. But it felt cooler to the touch. Probably from the difference in acryclic and alu conducting heat.
The larger PBs will dissipate heat easier because of more surface area, but as long as you have some air circulating, you should be fine.
I've seen people use speedballs to prop the laptop up or the small coolpads elevate the bool some.

My 2 favorite enhancements for my Ti are the PMCIA wireless card and the Cyber 3 handle. The handle works well as a handle (you'd be surprised how many people drop their precious laptops) but it mainly elevates the Ti off the desk and off my knees when i'm sitting in the recliner.

Has anyone tried the Quickertek handle? I can't figure out from the pictures how it attaches?

A cooling device like the Antec cooler or this Eumax cooling pad (with a great today-only price as noted in dealmac.com) is something you'd use on your desk. One person noted that they'd use it plugged into a powered USB hub on their desk, but I can't see carrying these things around in your backpack. At least they seem to be quiet, but they're not light or slim--and powerbook batteries aren't beefy enough:

Running at 138 right now.
Normally between 130-135. No need to worry!
I was thinking about buying a base with built in fans - not sure about the noise though.

i just installed it on my powerbook, pretty neat program, spent some time tweeking it to my liking. i've been around 129; fan kicks on around 132. i hit 138 (GPU) when driving my 22" monitor and only websurfing. i have a few questions:

1. when people post their temps are they talking about the GPU or CPU?

2. are there specific instances for when i should use this program?

3. how long before i stop eyballing the temp every five seconds?
