Hey Everyone ,

Within the next few weeks ill be selling this PC im typing from at the moment (athlon based windows box) to get myself an ibook Just to start with, the last time i used an Apple was a Duo Black and White Laptop .. ...

Just a few questions:

1. now, i know theres an australia wide shortage of iBooks meaning by customizing the ibook too much, i run the risk of an extended delay and loose parts/damaged goods (well thats what ive heard at least ), so ill be sticking with the standard setup (30GB, 256ddr) and buying an ipod for extra space. (ill buy 512 corsair afterwards)
Would this be ok: using the iPod for music storage and just using it as an external hard-drive jsut for mp3s - would this be a seamless solution into itunes to playback music on the laptop?

2. virtual windows ... when i think about it there arent too many apps that have no equivalent in MacOS, but yeah. I hear its not the best in speed etc .. not sure if ill be doing it but i just want to ensure i have all my bases covered.

3. That trackpoint software ... (virtual scrollwheels on the side etc..), is it awkward to work with ? ... it sounds genious but i can see it being abit painful.

Thanks alot everyone - i think q1 is my biggest query, but .. ya .. thanks

As far as I know, if you transfer songs from your computer to your iPod and then delete them from your computer, the next time you synchronize your iPod with your computer the songs previously transferred will be erased from your iPod. I think you may be able to de-select certain playlists from being updated. That may keep your songs from being lost. Never tried it before. Has anyone else here tried that?

When you plug your iPod in for the first time make sure to go to the preferences and uncheck the box that says "Update all songs and playlists". Also the trackpad program works fine, I use SideTrack. Not sure about the shortage of iBook's in Austrailia though.

1. I recently got a bone stock iBook G4 - the iPod functionalilty you mentioned will work fine just as long as you turn off the auto-sync setting in iTunes. Though you might want to consider getting a 40gb iPod - MP3 collection(s) take up a lot of space leaving hardly anything for external hard drive usage.

2. I still keep a PC around for those times when I must use Windows; I've never even installed VirtualPC.

3. Having come from a Windows-based laptop myself, I got accustomed to the virtual scrolling zone on the trackpad. I can say that the SideTrack driver works perfectly, the only complaint I have with it though is that theres no physical seperation between the scroll zone at the cursor zone (my Windows laptop had a little raised ridge on the trackpad to isolate the two which made using it in the dark easier), but thats not a big deal.
