To all my 17" owning bretheren...
I have never ever had a problem with the notorious PowerBook 'whine', until just last week when I performed a couple updates. I put in a 512MB RAM module (now 1GB total), and ran all the software updates that I had been putting off. I also at the time downloaded the Virex 7.5 update from .Mac. It was the next day, in my quiet office, that I noticed the dreaded WHINE! OHNO!!!! It is VERY annoying and left me perplexed. Did I nudge some imperceptible little something while installing the RAM? What exactly was the deal?... I took the RAM back out, still whining. Put it back in, paying close attention to the shield and screws, still whining. Fast forward to today, where I got onto the Apple Support site and started browsing the discussion forums. I searched for "17 whine" and found a new post from someone who pointed to the Virex 7.5 software being the culprit. I wasn't convinced that something like software could create such a problem, but I went ahead and, through the Virex 7.5 Help menu, learned how to officially un-install the software. guess what?... Quiet PowerBook again. I am sooo relieved that it took care of it, as I never knew how annoying the 'PB whine' could be.
The official uninstall process requires dragging a Terminal script from the Virex 7.5 installer disk to the Terminal window. I could not find a download of Virex 7.5 on the .Mac site anymore but luckily I still had the .dmg file on my G5. If someone needs it, I will be happy to email it to you, it's not a big file at all. Discussions anyone?.... Or am I late to the discussion already?...

No one should be using 7.5, but there have been threads on this already. That's why Apple pulled it and went back to 7.2.
