It's funny but once I took an Orinoco Silver PC Card and plunked it at a funny angle inside of a clamshell iBook. Granted, you couldn't reattach the keyboard (it was off to the side) but the card worked! It used the Orinoco's own antenna (there is no way to look it to the iBook's antenna, via a little cable dangling right behind it).

From fooling with this, it was clear it was the card's antenna that prevented it from fitting properly. Electronically everything worked well, and I could surf the Web wirelessly. If someone could lop off the antenna and find a way to connect it to the iBook's antenna cable, the thing would work just fine! Granted, this is more than a $100 worth of effort for someone like me, but it is possible...a project for the brave.

Keep in mind that other PC cards may not work! Orinoco cards work because Apple codeveloped Airport with Lucent, the original manufacturer of the Orinoco line. Orinoco cards are completely compatible with Apple's own drivers.
Would this work?

Dunno about the software issue, but if he claims it works, then it works.

Regarding the antenna... I don't think it would be too hard to take apart the Orinoco card and solder a new antenna pigtail onto it so you can plug in the iBook's antenna. Too much trouble in my opinion, especially when Airport cards can be had for the same price (unless you really need 11g connectivity).

I can verify that a Lucent/Orinoco WaveLAN Silver card will work in an AirPort slot. But the bulge on the card prevents closing the case, and the bulge contains components that cannot be removed without killing the card.

Regardless, AirPort cards aren't exactly rare, and the compatible WaveLAN cards haven't been made in years, so I don't know why you'd want to do this..

Thanks, tooki. Airport cards are selling for over $100 USD on eBay since Apple no longer sells them. WaveLAN cards are selling from less than $20 USD to around $10 USD on eBay. $80 USD is a lot of extra change in my pocket...I can take the extra money and buy a bigger hard drive for my iBook .
