A friend of mine has an ibook that she recently puchased on E-bay and whilst it worked fine for a while she now has the following problem:

the 's' key does not function - this is only when you try to type an 's in lowercase as you can type shift 's' and the uppercase 'S' appears fine. She has already replaced the keyboard and as the uppercase S is working it would seem to be software rather than Hardware.

Any ideas? Anything I can check out for her?

Should I try re-formatting the HD?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

That is bizarre. You might have her try using an external keyboard with the iBook. If it still doesn't work with that, it's definitely a software issue. But there is a possibility that there's something wrong with the keyboard interface or something which is why even a new keyboard didn't solve the problem.

Sounds like the keyboard layout file is damaged. See if switching to a different keyboard layout makes the key work. If it does, then either manually copy the keyboard layout file from a working Mac, or reinstall the OS, which will replace it with a fresh copy.

Thanks for the reply. As I am very basic in my understanding of computers in general, can you explain exactly what I need to do to this 'layoutfile' and where to find it.

Thanks again,
