Lately my Ti-400, 1GB, 60GB 5400 has been having KP grey screen "You need to re-start you computer" messages.

I ran Apple hardware tests and all checks O.K.

It has done this three times in a week. I just did a PMU reset so hopefully that will work.

It has never done this, it's just too good man, that's why it'sstill my favorite pooter.

Any ideas?

New install of MS office?

My scenario: MS Word X was spontaneously quitting on startup. I spent some time on Microsoft's website where there's loads of troubleshooting docs about duplicate font problems, etc., etc, Nothing helped, so I reinstalled Office X with all the updates and didn't have a single problem afterwards. The same fonts etc. were still there but somehow were no longer an issue.

You can spend time troubleshooting--or you can reinstall right away.

I'm curious: are you saying you prefer the Ti-400 over the 17" AlPB? How so? Why and wherefor?

Oh, I would not say I preffer it really. I just have a special fondness of it. It has been perfect since the day I got it. It went around the world with me and kept me earning money while I did.

I have worked on Macs for 14 years, it was the first one I ever owned.

I might pick up an iBook and build it out to be a road warrior. Weather sealing and the whole bit.

The 17 is an incredible machine and quite a spectacle, it just screams money and it has to stay fully operational so I like the idea of having a backup machine.

The 400 is now used by my girlfriend.

Great way to accessorize the GF!

A 12" 1 Ghz iBook is definitely more portable than the 17"...and more rugged. However, once you add in a CTO 60 GB HD, internal bluetooth, and an AE card, you're at $1303 (combo). Considering that amazon.com has a $150 rebate on the 12" 1.33 Ghz AlPB, bringing it to $1450 with all of the above already built-in but faster mhz, better keyboard, dual monitor support and lighter weight, then you've got a decision to make...

My son just got a 12" AlPB, and it's tremendously more portable than even my Ti-400. On the other hand, experience shows that it isn't as rugged as the 12" iBook, so it all depends on how klutzy you are... Seems to me you can put a keyboard skin on either one? I take it you're needing to protect the laptop from light rain?

PS: The only way I got decent wireless range on my Ti-400 was with a PMCIA wireless card, in my case the Cisco Aironet. The internal airport range just stank.
