http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...57695&rd=1

The seller claims it wont even boot from a CD.

I am looking for an ibook to take nearly all apart to customize it for harsh conditions. I might condsider this unit if it does not cost a total of $800 to get it up and running.

Whaddya think?

Logic board me thinks, not sure how much that would cost as a part.

Logic boards are EXPENSIVE.

I'd purely be guessing, but if it doesn't boot from CD or from HD, I'd say it probably has logic board issues specifically around the interfaces for drives...

Suppose it COULD be just a matter of bad firmware.

If you decide to get it, we might be able to help you troubleshoot it, but that machine could get really expensive really quickly... especially if you need a new logic board.

I recently purchased a G3 900 iBook with a broken screen... I can testify first hand that things CAN and WILL get expensive fast if you end up having to replace major components. It appears that with my iBook the ONLY LCD that works with it is the original, which costs $250 on eBay!

With 8 days remaining I'm sure that auction will get high - think about who else is bidding on it, probably people who have a lot more resources then you do (both monetary and parts). I'd say if you can get it for under $500, go for it, that way if you do have to replace the whole logic board (like $300 if you watch eBay carefully), you won't have to sink a lot of extra money into it.

Good luck!

Who know's maybe booting off an external HD will get the job done. I agree with the limit on price though. I wouldn't pay a cent over $450 personally, anymore would be stupid if it ends up being something serious.

why didn't the owner send it back to apple? the 1ghz 12"ers came out in the spring.

buy the thing and send it in to apple, this could be a great deal.

or am i missing something?

I thought about that, and it could be done assuming Apple doesnt deam the problem as abuse.

If it's not an abuse issue, this is a great idea.
Then buy AppleCare for it.

What I find interesting is that the seller's page claims 128MB of RAM, but the 1GHz iBooks had 256MB of RAM soldered to the logic board...

Well board could still be good the folder with the question just means that it can't find a system folder. Whether that means it can't find the disk or the disk doesn't have an os on it I can not say.

well, it's tempting but it still has 6 days on it and it is up to $365.

Good Ol' ebay, a place where folks often pay more for the lastest model slightly used than if bought new...:-).

Yeah, I wonder about the external too...
