Why can't I surf the web with my wi-fi card? (G3 Lombard, Aerolan Card)

I have a FriendlyNet Asanté AeroLAN PMCIA Wireless Adapter AL 1211-DP card for my G3 Powerbook (Bronze keyboard Lombard). I recently tried to use the card for the first time. I chose, from a list, the same unencrypted "infrastructure--SSID" that my brother was using to surf the net for free. Even though my brother's PC laptop was sitting right next to mine, and even though my Aerolan Wireless 3x utility indicated a mild signal strength (about 25%) from the same infrastructure, my brother was able to surf the web and I was not. Any ideas why this would be? I turned AppleTalk to Active (correct?). In case it's relevant, I have Internet Explorer 5 and Mac OS 8.6.
Right now I am in a different location with a different SSID with a stronger signal strengh (about 33%), but still no web connection. The utility is able to scan and list local SSID's, so something is working.
Thanks.

has this card/machine combo worked in any circumstance, such as with higher signal strength? lacking that info i'd pin the cause on signal strength. finally, iirc the old aerolan/lucent type cards didn't support appletalk over 802.11b (or it might just me my memory making me a liar), so having it set on or off shouldn't effect anything.

Thanks for the prompt response. So far I haven't been able to surf the net in any circumstance, but again, I don't know if that's because of weak signal strength. That's why I mentioned my brother, he was able to surf the web with his laptop next to mine. Maybe he has a stronger antenna/card?
So it doesn't matter if AppleTalk is on or off? Do you know if there are any other settings--on my IE browser or in control panel--that would affect surfing ability?
I guess I should hunt a hotspot with a very high signal strength for troubleshooting?
Thanks.

Still troubleshooting...I realized that the second time I tried to websurf using the card, I forgot to change my remote settings from PPP (for my dial-in). This time on the "connect via:" pulldown menu, there was an option for my PMCIA Aerolan PMCIA card. For configure I chose "for DHCP server." (Correct?) But I don't know how to fill in the empty field "DHCP client ID." Maybe that is what is keeping me from websurfing?
Thanks.

You don't need to fill that in with a DHCP server because the server assignes an ip. You only need it if you are connected directly to the modem.

Thanks, still no luck. Do you know if I need to change internet explorer settings or any other settings? Unfortunately, even connected via AeroLan card, configured for DHCP server, with a signal (level: 21) from an unencrypted SSID, with AppleTalk either active or inactive, no luck. I'll keep trying...
