According to most tests that are floating around: No, it wouldn't.

its got a 16 meg cache - which kicks up the performance.
it's worth it even if it kills a little battery life

Neither in my Pismo nor in my TiBook I recognized any changes of battery life. But both units became noticably snappier.

i read some test that said it was negligible - something around 4% loss. BUT, programs launch faster, etc... so you can actually do more work in less time - so it makes up for any loss you may experience.
4% of 4 hours is really nothing.

The 80GB 5400rpm hard drive has an 8MB buffer, and not a 16MB one.

the description IS accurate, the model number corresponds to the one shown in About this Mac > More Info.

I put in one of the IBM 5400 8mb cache drives when they first came out and I don't think there was any difference in the battery performance. But then I wouldn't have noticed a 4% drop. I really love the drive, though.

Nope, it has a 16MB buffer. My BTO 80GB 5200rpm is a Toshiba MK8026GAX and it has a 16MB Cache.
I guess that Apple uses different hard drives for BTO or maybe we're just lucky...

I believe the earlier 15" BTO models (5,2) 1.25GHz with 80GB @5400 had the Hitachi with 8MB, while the current model (5,4) 1.5GHz uses the Toshiba with 16MB.
As far as power consumption of the Toshiba goes: Barefeats have a word or two on it at: http://www.barefeats.com/pb12.html
Bottom line no difference in their test set-up.

It makes a difference but apparently not a noticable one.

So how much is the retial price of an 5400 rpm hard disk and what is the max size they offer? I wonder if I BTO it from Apple or replace it by myself. I tried to open a PowerBook 12 inch and it was easier than expected. I wonder if the 15 inch is the same or not. Anyone has any experiences to share?
D.
