Hi Guys,

I'm very happy with my PB 17" Rev C and I've had it for a few months now.
However, yesterday I noticed a constant clicking sound coming from the HD, it seems to "click" whenever i push a button, scroll down on a webpage or even when I move the cursor around on the desktop.
I've got a feeling that this HD won't last much longer... and the fact that it's a Hitachi (IBM) HD doesn't make me feel better either. I've had to RMA 10 of these IBM Deathstar Drives a few years ago, they all failed... and it always started with a clicking sound.

I've backed everything up already, gotta love the 4x Superdrive.
Does anyone have a similar experience with his 5400rpm PB?

Thanks.

I used to have a 12 inch PowerBook which have the same clicking noise. When I had my dock magnatic on and moving my mouse over it, I heard the noise. It seemed that Mac OS X was logging every movement to the hard disk :-P I was just kidding. I meant, it sounded more like the system is writing something to the virtual memory. But I just didn't understand.

My 15 inch PowerBook 1.25 didn't have this weird sound.

I have the same drive, Hitachi 80G/5400RPM, on my 15incher since last November. It's nearly max'd out and has been running fine so far. It makes sounds; but no clicking noises that intrudes on my consciousness.

Am I wrong in saying that scrolling and moving the cursor have more to do with the CPU than the HD. I have read a few posts that mention slight clicking sounds in the new 12" PB with 5400 upgrade, but I can't remember how it was resolved. I would be paranoid if I heard noises out of my HD and would probably back everything up and ship it off for inspection. I'm sure somebody here will chime in with the same problem though. I'll try a search in some forums in the meantime.

I have a similar problem with my 12" rev c. I've been looking around for the last few weeks for a solution, but haven't found anything yet.

I have the Toshiba 80GB/5400RPM drive. But I'm not so sure it is the hard drive making the noise. For the longest time, I thought it was a user interface feature - until I got sick of it and tried to turn it off.

I look forward to hearing if anyone has talked to Apple about this problem, or better yet - if anyone has fixed it themselves. :-)

I just did a very unscientific study to see if my hard drive is doing any reads or writes when this noise occurs.

I used (MenuMeters to monitor the reads and writes to the hard drive, and then loaded a web page with a Flash module (which is guaranteed to make the noise on my system). According to MenuMeters, there is nothing going on with the hard drive.

My next guess would be that it is processor-related. It seems that the processor load goes up each time the noise is heard. I don't think this is good...
