I'm working with a dual usb iBook 500 and I've been having an interesting problem. It started when i replaced a dead hard drive. Everything went smoothly on the replacement of the hard drive, but when i was done it all went wrong. The iBook booted just fine after installing the new hard drive. Since it was a new hard drive i was reformating and installing OSX. When the installation was about a third finnished the computer powered off. The battery was full and the computer was plugged in. After this it would not power up. I tried all of my minor tricks to get it started and nothing worked.
I took the battery out and unplugged it for about half an hour. The computer would then start up agian. I once again began the install not knowing what was wrong or what to do next. This time the computer shut down about two thirds the way through.
I have tried all of apples suggestions for when a computer will not power on (removed additional ram, reset button, periferals) except to replace the DC board and/or logic board. I have not done this because i can still get the computer to boot and this suggests that neither of these are the problem.
Any suggestions would be much appriciated.

it will boot from both the os x cd and the hard drive. with either the same problem persists. within ten minuets the computer will hard shut down. some times it makes a chirping noise. then it will not reboot until i take away all power suplies for a bit, then i boot and the same thing happens.

I took the whole computer apart last night and built it from scratch so that i could be sure of all the cable connections. after the rebuild the computer started with no problems. OS X install went smoothly and the computer ran overnight. this mourning i began to install os x updates and it happened again. just shut off. the next time i got it to start up (shut down in 45 seconds) it said that there was no startup disk. i put in the osx install cd but before i could take a look my 45 seconds was up and the screen went black.

really folks, any help, please.

Jesse
